MAMMOTH RIVER ADVENTURES
Mammoth River Adventures
the Founders
Mammoth River Adventures was founded by Austin Wassmuth and Jesse Stone in 2016 when they purchased Lochsa Rafting Company from Marty Smith. The two had one purpose in mind, create a rafting company with the atmosphere for the greatest Lochsa River trips of all time.
Austin and Jesse both grew up in Grangeville, Idaho. A small community with values rooted deeply in the outdoors. They grew up less than an hour’s drive from the Snake, Salmon, and Clearwater Rivers. This meant a lot of family outings spent at one of the nearby rivers.
The two first got to know each other when Jesse’s dad (bball coach) talked his 4th-grade son (Jesse) into allowing 3rd-grade kid (Austin) to play on the basketball team. From then on, the two formed a competitive friendship, always encouraging each other to maximize their potential.
In high school, the pair worked side by side at Idaho Afloat, a large multiday rafting company on the Snake and Salmon Rivers. They managed the warehouse and equipment. In turn, they were rewarded with many days on the amazing rivers of Idaho. When they turned 18, as soon as you can legally guide in Idaho, they had mastered everything they needed to know to receive their licenses and began guiding.
Spring, anticipating high water. UPDATE THIS. Trip after trip and memory after memory a love and a passion was born for the Lochsa.
Austin and Jesse went on to play sports at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Washington. They both continued their studies and graduated from University of Idaho with bachelor’s degrees in Recreation Management.
There, Austin and Jesse continued to work with each other as raft guides for various outfitters in Riggins Idaho and spent nearly every summer evening under the stars working on guided over night river trips. As the years went by they continued to build their river skills and knowledge for providing wordl class commercial rafting adventures while imprinting a deep love for rafting.
Both Austin and Jesse graduated with Recreation degrees from the University of Idaho. They always dreamed of becoming river outfitters and this seemed like a natural path to take. After graduation they set their sights on acquiring permits on the Lochsa which led them to the purchase of Lochsa River Company and the creation of Mammoth River Adventures.
